In order to establish the link between quantitative imaging (QI) results and patient outcomes, we need to understand the bias and variance of QI results. In the era of precision medicine, the demand for quantitative results from imaging studies will increase as treatment decisions are driven by such results. The added value of quantification in both research and clinical environments is likely to increase as healthcare initiatives place increased pressure on radiologists to provide decision support for evidence-based care. This can be achieved in part by promoting the quantification of imaging results.
